Open letter to the Chapter –
An extraordinary event happened at the March 2025 chapter meeting last night.
My presentation regarding the Monument Conservation Committee’s (MonCon) efforts and planned outreach to local agencies and others initially hit a financial impediment. I made a motion to increase the expense account for the MonCon committee to $3000. This $3000 was a median amount for luncheon venue rental and food service for an estimated 50-60 guests. Given the current chapter resources and other planned chapter expenses, this would clearly have brought the chapter’s finances to a depletion level not seen by this writer - ever.
It was clear that some compromises or a postponement would have to be made.
Due to the largess of several chapter members, the MonCon Outreach Program received funding not only for this year’s effort, but remarkably for future events as well.
Because of the funding offers by some chapter members, a subsequent motion to create an expense account in our chapter’s bookkeeping named “Monument Conservation Outreach Account” was moved and seconded. The motion carried with the account already having a promised initial funding of well over $5000!

This committee chair wishes to thank Messrs. Joe Morris, Michael Stanton of MBS Land Surveys, Tucker Sanders of North Coast Engineering, for their generous contributions to this effort. This chair was also moved to make a contribution. A very special thank you is due Mr. Dan Manion for his extremely generous offer to provide the major portion of the initial funding for this account, an offer that not only ensured this year’s outreach program but also preserved the remaining chapter assets.
How to implement Monument Conservation (otherwise known as monument preservation) is a perennial issue that has been around since the inception of CLSA. It is the commitment by this committee and our chapter to provide information and guidance to local agencies (and others) to create and provide proper contract elements that will turn monumentation preservation from a liability to an asset.
