First off, I am bad at these things and hate trying to come up with bios for myself, I would much prefer to just sit and have a conversation with someone, so if you have questions just come ask. The most important thing about me is I am a father of 3 and married to a wonderful lady, nothing else is nearly as important as that.

I spent my childhood moving between states, never living in one state for more than 4 years at a time. I was always the new kid in town. I have lived in 11 states and surveyed in 7. We moved a lot as my father was in the military at first then became a highway construction surveyor so we moved when jobs were complete. When I was a kid, we, my siblings (middle child of 7) and I, would go out on the weekends to help our father with projects occasionally. This did not entice me into the profession, I was more interested in computers and video games. I started Surveying as a summer job out of high school in 1999 with the intent to go into a computer programming or networking program after summer. I quickly discovered that I was very good at construction surveys.

I spent the first year and a half of my surveying career on highway construction surveying crews working in various states. I moved to the bay area in 2001 to try and get out of the construction side of things and more into residential surveys to have a more stable life and not move as much. I worked as a survey tech for a local company there, where I learned the office side of the business learning to put my knowledge of computers to use. Sometime in 2004 I left the bay and ended up in Santa Maria near my parents at that time, my mother grew up in Nipomo and often returned to the area. While in Santa Maria I met my future wife and in June of 2006 we married and moved back to the bay (her idea this time).

In 2018 I took a position as a project surveyor at MBS Land Surveys and became the Survey Manager there in October of the same year. In March of 2025 my role has once again transitioned, now to Vice President at MBS Land Surveys. I have been in the surveying profession for 25 years now and hope to be here many more years.

I like to say that my land surveying path initiated the moment I decided to switch majors from criminology to Geomatics Engineering. Upon Graduation and hot summers in Fresno, I returned to the lovely Central Coast to work for Wallace Group and if you ask me, this is where the fun really started. Since then, I became a professional Land Surveyor and became involved in CLSA. This is my second year as a Chapter director, and it has been a learning experience. Learning and observing the organization’s operations at a state level has been a great opportunity, which opened the doors to other adventures such as becoming a CLSA Education foundation Director and meeting surveyors from all over the state. Even though this is my last year as a chapter director, I hope to continue supporting the chapter’s efforts in the years to come.

In 1979 I hired on as a ‘Juggie’ for a geophysical survey company. Juggies lay out cables, blow up dynamite, etc. so that the seismograph can then get a reading and geophysicists can interpret if there is oil or natural gas deep, deep, underground. It was travel work, living in motels, so turnover was high. Late winter of 1980 they put me on the survey crew as the tail chainman. My head chain man was a woman. We used a compass and a cable and set out straight lines that and pin flags every 100 feet or something that then the whole operation would follow. Our lead surveyor (The Happy Hippie Surveyor he called himself) was respectful to his people, my parents had a friend whose son was a surveyor (CSUF grad too), I had done a lot of map reading as a backpacker and I liked the outdoors. I went back to college to study surveying. News flash, April 18, 2025: I woke up this morning and am still surveying.
